Traditions
"If we remembered everyday that we could
lose someone at any moment, we would love
them more fiercely and freely, and without fear -
not because there is nothing to lose, but
because everything can always be lost."
Visiting the cemeteries where family members are buried
has been a tradition I've long been part of.
As the youngest and only girl in my family, I went along
with my Mom and Grandma as long as I can remember.
Perhaps because of this, I have such an interest in
cemeteries and can spend hours meandering through,
lost in the history.
Chloe, putting the flag at my Dad's grave.
The last seven years we've helped put small flags up at the cemetery where my Dad's grave is.
This year was a little different, we weren't sure the small flags would be put up but the American Legion pulled through not only for the small ones but also the Avenue of Flags.
It looks beautiful as ever.
In 2013, volunteering for the first time, to put flags out. |
Putting flags at the graves is so meaningful, and it's personal.
Straightening flowers, righting statues that have tipped . . . they're small gestures
but it's a chance to show a tiny measure of appreciation and gratitude.
My younger daughter doesn't like cemeteries but visits her Grandpa's grave,
who died in May of 2009, while she was born in December of that year.
Visiting at dusk is my favorite time.
It's peaceful and serene.
Blessings to you this Memorial holiday.
From Rumi ~
Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes.
Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation.
