Getting Dirty Day - Cold Weather Painting!

Cold Weather Painting?

If you've got some exterior painting to tackle around your home
there are temperature guidelines to ensure the best outcome.

For latex paint the temperature should be between
50 - 85 degrees.  Keep in mind during colder months you
also need to consider the temperature of your substrate -
the item being painted.

Oil based paints have a little wider range, and painting can be

 done between 40 - 90 degrees.

I used a paint today by Sherwin Williams called "Resilience."
It can be used in temperatures as low as 35 degrees and it develops

resistance to moisture in a shorter time than traditional paints - just 2 hours.
It's a great product and can be bought in quarts as opposed to gallons.

A tinted quart runs about $25 regular price.

Color matching exterior paints is always difficult.

Each side of the house gets different amounts of sunlight and weathering.
Good luck with your home projects!

Painted Countertops - A Must Do or Oh No!

Would you try painting your countertops?

If your dream countertops aren't in the budget right
now
this might be a good option to get you by.

Here's my favorite update, from Little Farmstead;
it's simple and classic.

 Before:
Dark green laminate

After:
Clean, subtle white

Julie explains the steps for painting laminate when
she painted the buffet in her dining room.
Before:
 After:

Basic steps:
Clean the laminate well
Sand
Paint
(she used latex paint)
Seal
(she recommends Peel Stop Clear Binding Sealer by Zinsser, which doesn't yellow like polyurethane)

You can also buy a countertop kit (such as Rust-Oleum) which is meant to replicate the look of granite.  Kits vary in size and price depending on your kitchen.  They have a strong, epoxy-finish top coat which they indicate is stain and water resistant.
via Home Depot - $148.00/qt.

Here is a before and after paint transformation using the RUST-OLEUM Countertop  kit from the blog Project Goble.

Before:
After:

The DIY home-owners raved about the countertop transformation:"Did we mention how much we LOVE our countertops?!? It was totally worth the time, mess, and effort we put into transforming them."

Get Rid of Your Old Cans of Paint! It's Easy. Here's How . . .

Do you have cans of paint you don't want?

Are you losing valuable space because you don't know what to do with leftover paint cans?

Easy solution!

And no, it does not involve drying it out or solidifying it so you can
eventually put it in the trash.

You can take your cans of leftover paint
(or other hazardous materials such as cleaners, oils, insecticides and solvents)
1954 County Home Road, Marion.

If the paint is good, they'll stock it in their free paint room for others to use.
Old and non-usable paints/hazardous materials will be properly disposed of.

There's no charge to drop them off, or appointment needed.
Their hours are Monday - Saturday, 7:00 - 4:30.

"We believe in resource recovery as much as we believe in diverting waste from the landfill. Our "Free Paint, Cleaners, Etc. area offers free reusable products such as cleaners and paints. So if you're bringing in an almost-empty bottle of glass cleaner, check and check to see if we have a replacement bottle. Learn more about our "Free Paint, Cleaners, Etc. area.
If you don't have enough leftover product for our "Free Paint, Cleaners, Etc. area, your waste material and/or containers are processed according to state and federal environmental regulations and sent to facilities permitted to handle hazardous material."

If you're not familiar with the Solid Waste Agency, here's what you'll do to drop off your paint (or pick some up).

At the County Home Road location, drive in the main gate and proceed to the scale house.
Yup.  Even if you're just dropping off paint.

Be friendly, stop at the window and tell them you're dropping off paint.  The nice attendant will direct you to  to take the first left, where you'll enter the big Resource Recovery building from the south.

Check out how nice and clean it is!

Another attendant will find out what you need.
I unloaded 9 gallon-buckets of paint and stain.  Yay!

To complete my homework, I decided to check out the Free Paint Room.  You can enter from inside of the building, about 3/4 of the way in, or pull through, park in the west lot, and enter from outside.

It was pretty bare when I stopped in, but if you're feeling industrious about cleaning out your garage, basement or sheds, I bet it'll have some good freebies available soon.

As a side note, if you're looking to paint and need a primer, stopping by makes perfect sense.  Find a light shade of free paint instead of investing in regular primer.
It'll do the job!

Here's the entrance to the Free Paint/Cleaners Room from the outside,
with a parking lot right alongside.

This makes for a great fall-clean up project!
