All Things Property Tax: Assessment Surprise, Appeal Information, Homestead Tax Credit

Surprised by Your Recent
Property Tax Assessment?

We can prepare a free market analysis for your home
to help you decide about appealing the valuation.

If you're thinking of appealing, there's a process
which requires a petition to be filed with your
city or county assessor between April 2nd and April 30th,
postmarked no later than April 30th.

Contact information for all assessors in Iowa,
county and city, can be found here at Iowa Assessors.
Forms, including the petition, procedures/policies,
can be found here under the Appeal Assessment section.

You may be surprised to learn what the market value is for your home
with the scarcity of inventory and the surplus of waiting buyers.
As always, a Market Analysis is free and
a service we're happy to provide to our clients.

While we're on the topic of property taxes, make sure you've filed for
the Iowa Homestead Tax Credit.
You only file once, and the claim is allowed for successive years without refiling.
Click HERE for the Homestead Credit Form.
For homes in Cedar Rapids, you can check to see if you've filed for the Homestead Credit
by going to the Assessor's site search page (HERE for link).
Type in your address.
When you open your property's page, look to the left beneath your name, address, legal description, etc.  There will be a line that says "Homestead Credit" and will indicate yes or no.
If it says no,  then beneath it you'll see a link to a printable Homestead Tax Credit form.
There's also the option to fill out and submit the form online.
You'll want to submit the form before July 1st so you can claim the credit for the current year.
For Linn County residents, the process is the same, except you'll use this link for Linn County.

Thanks!  Remember, we're here to help as a resource.

Sincerely -
Steve & Judy
