Check this out - right here in Cedar Rapids! And it's free!

When you see the painting of American Gothic, what is your first thought?
Do you think about the fact that Grant Wood painted it here in Cedar Rapids?
It's become so iconic and omnipresent that I seldom give it any consideration at all.
Many of us who live in or around Cedar Rapids never realize we've been driving right by the Grant Wood Art Studio.  It's located at 810 2nd Avenue SE, set back from the street.  The former address was 5 Turner Alley (a much cooler-sounding address in my opinion), and was his studio from 1924 - 1935.  American Gothic was painted there in 1930.

The Grant Wood Studio is open April 11, 2015 - December 26, 2015.
Hours are Saturdays and Sundays from Noon - 4:00.
There is no admission charge during regular hours. (FREE!!)
Please note it is not handicap accessible.

While you're at it, you can plan a trip to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art at 410 3rd Avenue SE.
Exhibits change and it's a beautiful venue.
It also holds the world's largest collection of works by Grant Wood.
Admission is FREE for everyone on Thursdays from 4:00 - 8:00 pm

Take a little time to check out a couple of local treasures!

(My new-found knowledge is thanks to my daughter's Art Teacher, who scheduled a field trip to both locations)
